Plea to Build Modern Slaughterhouses

In the wake of the recent crackdown on scores of abattoirs in the state due to lack of mandatory clearances, meat traders and labourers have demanded that local bodies build modern slaughterhouses and ensure strict enforcement of norms to save the meat industry in the state.
“Instead of building modern slaughterhouses, local bodies lease out abattoirs built without following any standards. When food safety authorities crack down on such facilities, it is the meat traders and labourers who face the brunt,’’ M Nasser, state president of Kerala Meat Merchant & Labourers’ Union, told a news conference here the other day.
Nasser said that the government should also ensure that diseased cattle do not enter through the state’s borders at a time when majority of slaughter houses in Kerala have been closed down.
“In a state like Kerala which is one of the biggest consumers of meat products, it is the responsibility of the government to ensure that good quality meat is made available to the public,’’ said S Babu, state general secretary of the Union.
