Panmasala products worth Rs.30 lakh seized - Police have no power to register cases under food safety and standards act

A day after the state banned the sale of panmasala products, the police on Saturday seized a container full of Panmasala products, worth around Rs 30 lakhs, from Chalakkudy.According to sources, the consignment was seized from a container-truck parked at Potta junction near Chalakkudy.“The consignment was being shifted to another vehicle. The drivers of both the vehicles have been detained,’’ they said. Preliminary investigations revealed that the consignment was to be sent to a warehouse in Kattur and meant for sale in the state.Police said it was yet to register a case on the incident, and awaiting directions from the higher-ups.When contacted, police technical officer D. Sivakumar told Deccan Chronicle that the sale of panmasala products were banned under the food safety and standards act and the police did not have the right to register cases as of now.’’
