Madurai, Jan. 16:Tamilnadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry has sought remedial measures in the implementation of the Food Safety and Standards (FSS) Act and Regulations enforced by the Central Government throughout the country, since August 5.In a representation submitted to Mr V.N. Gaur, Chief Executive Officer, Food Safety and Standards Authority, Government of India, during his recent visit to the city, Chamber Senior President, Mr S. Rethinavelu, pointed out that the Act has been replete with highly stringent and unjustified provisions which would force small traders and manufacturers of food products to quit the field.Drawing the attention extensively in a memorandum on various provisions of the Act such as licensing, mandatory obligations, definition of food business, powers and punishment, structural inadequacy for implementation, etc, that carried serious implications for 19 lakhs food processors and 1.5 crore people engaged in food related business in the country, he urged that the matter be taken up with Mr Gulam Nabi Azad, Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, and effect necessary remedial measures and implement the Act from April 2014, creating in the meanwhile, adequate awareness and provision of requisite training to traders, producers and officials responsible for the implementation.
