The Food Safety Commissioner did not have the authority to order the closure of a hotel - says Kerala Hotel and Restaurant Association

Restaurateurs under the banner of the Kerala Hotel and Restaurant Association will organise a dharna in front of the Secretariat on Tuesday to protest against what the association terms the ‘harassment’ suffered by hotel owners at the hands of the officials of the Food Safety Commissioner’s office. Association general secretary Jose Mohan told a press conference here on Monday that they were not against lawful safety inspections. The Food Safety Commissioner had ordered closure of many hotels on the ground that they did not meet the relevant norms of the food safety act, though he did not have the authority to order the closure of a hotel, he said.
Association treasurer Moideenkutty Haji said that the present mode of operations of the Food Safety Commissioner would result in the throttling of the hotel and restaurant industry in Kerala.
