770 kg adulterated ghee seized

Ahmedabad: Flying squad of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Thursday confiscated a whopping 770 kg of adulterated ghee from Hatkeshwar area of the city. Food safety officers raided several shops and eating joints in various zones of the city which eventually claimed the haul from east zone of the city.
"A team of four was deployed in each zone of the city to inspect quality of food stuff offered in eateries of those areas. Almost 770 kg of adulterated ghee and 37 kg of vanaspati were seized from Hatkeshwar area," said Dr Suhas Kulkarni, medical officer of health, AMC. About 80 kg of butter was confiscated from Amraiwadi as well, he informed.On inspection, the adulterated ghee was found to be a mix of vanaspati, soyabean butter and water. Samples of ghee have been sent to laboratory for further scrutiny."According to the New Food Safety and Standard Act, commissioner of food and drugs at Gandhinagar will be informed about the result of the samples. He will order further legal action depending results derived. If samples are found unsafe for human consumption, its manufacturers may be imprisoned or fined. If samples are substandard, a fine may be levied," said Kulkarni.
