SHIMOGA: Gone are the days when public used to have their junk food and other eatables from street vendors parked in unhygienic places. Things have certainly changed, thanks to the administration, which has provided a well-planned spot for vendors to run their business at a new food court in Shimoga.
City Municipal Council was quick in grabbing the idea put forth by Shimoga deputy commissioner V Ponnuraj . There were a few vacant conservancy spaces in the city which were lying unused.Food vendors used to create nuisance every evening from 6pm to 11pm when their sale was at the peak. They used to dispose of waste near Gandhi Park, which is surrounded by many colleges. The demand by students to remove street vendors was getting louder.When the idea of utilizing conservancies was furnished, CMC converted the space into a concrete-covered area and spent Rs 3.5 lakh to build a well planned food court, first of its kind in the state.It provides space for 28 vegetarian vendors to run their business. The new space is fully covered, airy, well lit and clean.Many customers have thanked the administration for fulfilling their demand. CMC is building a separate space nearby for vendors selling non-vegetarian items.Parmesha, a vendor, said "More and more people are visiting the food court. Business is picking up really well and we are happy about it."City commissioner P G Ramesh said this new initiative has helped CMC move further towards their aim of keeping Shimoga clean.
