No advice on banning junk food: TN government

CHENNAI: Despite the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India’s (FSSAI) claim that a letter has been issued to all state governments asking them to consider banning sale of junk food near schools, the TN government seems to have not received it. “I don’t think we have received any such letter,” said the state Health Minister Dr VS Vijay, while another senior official in the department vouched for it.This also means that no directives have been issued asking schools to stay away from junk food and carbonated drinks. The FSSAI had made this claim in an affidavit filed before the Delhi High Court in relation to a PIL filed by an NGO seeking a ban on the sale of junk food and carbonated drinks within a 500 yard radius of schools.
