300 kg chicken seized at checkpost

In a dawn raid on the border areas of Thiruvananthapuram district and at the Amarvila checkpost, food safety officials seized 300 kg of poultry meat (chicken) unfit for human consumption and confiscated two motorbikes which were used to transport the meat to various places in the district. A press note issued here by Biju Prabhakar, Food Safety Commissioner, said all food safety officers and special food safety squads had been instructed to initiate stringent action against those found ferrying meat from illegal slaughterhouses that dot the border areas. Such meat had been found stuffed into unclean sacks, polythene covers and transported in motorbikes, private vehicles and in vehicles that run ‘parallel services,’ the press note said. Chicken and other meat were being brought into the State in violation of the Food Safety Standards Licensing Regulation. Raw meat should be brought in vehicles with facility for refrigeration. Such vehicles should only be used to transport food material, the press note said. The officials concerned had been instructed to seize vehicles used for the illegal transport of meat into the State, the press note added.
